Thrifted Christmas Village Using Remote Controlled Tea Lights

Okay, okay, soooo I’ve started to decorate for Christmas and this year this little Christmas village was the first thing to go up.  These little villages hold a special place in my heart.  Growing up, my dad would purchase Department 56 houses for my mom.  My dad even built a little area for my mom to display the village overtop of their wood burning stove (while not in use, of course) and there, my mom would display her beautiful village.  She would go all out and she’d put so much love and care into the display.  In my opinion, Christmas villages are the epitome of Christmas nostalgia!
For me, well, I don’t own any Department 56, but I’ve slowly collected Walmart pieces and I’ve recently noticed that thrift stores often have these little houses for sale.
Since some of the thrifted village pieces have been well-loved, sometimes that means the cords are old or a bulb is missing, as a result, I decided to forgo the cords and ordered these little battery-operated and remote-controlled lights.  I wouldn’t have the heart to do this to a Department 56 piece, but with these thrifted village pieces, I figured it’d be the perfect opportunity to try out the light swap.
I simply removed the lights and then hot glued the new battery-operated lights into the little holes where the cords had once belonged.  Luckily, all of the tea lights fit perfectly into these spots, but I imagine with every house being different some may need added reinforcements so they don’t become wobbly.
With my little remote I’m now able to turn my little village on from a distance.  Easy, so easy!
I love this so much!
This little village makes my heart so happy.  I’ve yet to pull out my Walmart houses and haven’t decided if I’ll be removing the cords or not, but I’m certainly leaning in that direction.

What do you think?!  Would you do this?  I’m thrilled with the result!
Thanks, as always, for stopping by!  I appreciate each and every visit and comment!
Marie 🙂

  1. *Found you at Crafty Creators* This is so cute! I hate having all of the annoying cords to deal with, so this is a great solution. I also love villages and often collect pieces from the thrift store. I find that when they are thrifted (inexpensive) I am more willing to try new things like repainting them. I have a couple of sets that I kept in their original state and like to set up under my Christmas trees, but I've also restyled some to look like haunted houses for Halloween and snowy white houses for after Christmas. I'm toying with the idea of repainting some to look like fairy houses and put them outside but we'll see…..:D

  2. This is a fabulous idea and definite sounds like something I'd do (all the cords from the village drive me crazy anyway because they can be so hard to hide!).
